The TecO research group at the chair of Pervasive Computing at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) invites applications for a researcher (doctoral or post-doctoral level) in the area of contextual reasoning for digital preservation of business processes within the EU FP7 project TIMBUS (Timeless Business: http://timbusproject.net/ and http://www.teco.edu/research/projects/timbus/index.html).
The candidate will perform novel research on the representation of context, context modelling, and contextual reasoning for digital preservation. The goal of research is to develop a reasoning system that is based on sound and complete inference procedures for a context representation formalism. The system should be enabled to learn, and reason about, contextual dependencies in service-oriented architectures and business process virtualisation and storage. The research will be performed in a vibrant interdisciplinary environment involving researchers from a wide range of areas. Concerns addressed in TIMBUS range from legal and economic aspects to technical aspects of software development, virtualisation, and sensor technologies. Application areas include multimedia productions, the Internet of Services, civil engineering, and particle physics.
The ideal candidate combines a strong background in knowledge representation/engineering and semantic web technologies with openness to interdisciplinary scientific viewpoints and application areas. Applicants must have a master (doctoral student position) or Ph.D. (post-doc position) in computer science or a closely related field, and be fluent in English and/or German.
KIT combines the mission of a university with that of a large-scale research center of the Helmholtz Association. With 8000 employees and an annual budget of EUR 650 millions, KIT is one of the largest research and education institutions worldwide. The TecO at KIT is an internationally well-renowned research group in Ubiquitous Computing and wireless sensor networks. TecO has significant experience in the area of knowledge-based reasoning in context-aware systems, intelligent self-organizing distributed systems (especially in the area of wireless sensor networks), and middleware architectures for bridging extremely heterogeneous computing environments from networks consisting of tiny sensor nodes to distributed ERP systems.
Applications should be sent by email to Hedda.Schmidtke@kit.edu. Applicants for a doctoral position should submit their curriculum vitae together with one publication (e.g. master thesis). Applications for a post-doctoral position should contain the curriculum vitae together with three selected publications, names of three references, and a short statement of research and teaching interests. Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2011 and continue until the position is filled.
KIT is an equal opportunity employer and particularly encourages applications from women and members of minorities. Candidates with physical disabilities will be given preference. The salary is commensurate with experience (TV-L 13).
