Assistant for an Information Database, Proceeding of ACM´s Sixth International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management, 1997, Las Vegas, USA
Abstract

Information is one of the key factors of today’s business. Information bases seem to be the tool for handling this information, but this solution is double-edged. You can get your information, but you are often overwhelmed by the mass of information you are confused with. Search machines seem to be a first step, since they sort the information according to your needs, but they also often overwhelm you with their results.

The solution we present helps a user to get a personal view on the information, to suggest new information according to the users interest, to find similarities between users according to their interests and to support the creation and maintenance of an information database. This was implemented by using features of the SAP´s R/3 Information Database and a special method of information filtering; the resulting module was called an information assistant. This paper discusses the information filtering and user profiling methods as long as the integration of the methods in SAP´s Information Database.
