Software Campus: Intelligent Environment Secures Choice Of Interaction (IntEnseChoI)

Potential advantages of home automation are reduced energy costs and lifestyle support. According to BCG, around $12 billion were invested into Smart Home technologies between 2008 and 2018. However, there are several challenges to master before a real full-automated, context-aware Smart Home can be implemented.

One of the challenges is to optimize the potential of communication among Smart Homes and their residents. Residents, especially families, are heterogeneous and have different preferences. A static Human Machine Interface (HMI) is a compromise to all residents and causes dissatisfaction. Additionally, current popular Smart Home control devices provide poor accessibility. A touchscreen needs additional features to be used by blind people and deaf people cannot use Smart Speakers. The research project IntEnseChoI aims to implement a first universal-designed prototype that provides a portfolio of interaction capabilities that suffice a heterogenous group of users. Hereby, the focus is on people with visual or hearing impairments.

The implementation of the prototype includes speech recognition and chat capability, face and gesture recognition, a project-developed handheld controller, an assistive robot and an adequate test environment.
