About Me
I am Tobias Röddiger, a research group leader for Wearable Systems at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Previously, I have studied and conducted research at KIT, MIT and Lancaster University. I have published 20 papers, many in highly recognized venues, and filed 3 patents. I have founded two companies, worked at Microsoft and shipped systems that have been used by millions worldwide. In past research, I implemented various embedded systems, including the world’s first open-source platform for ear-based sensing “OpenEarable” and “AstroAnt” , a miniature robot set to depart to the moon. One of my focus areas are earables, smart sensor devices worn on the ears. My research has shown their application in respiration and eye tracking, cough detection, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and invisible human-computer interaction using a muscle in the middle ear. Recently, I have also been working on automated machine learning for microcontrollers with neural architecture search available as an end-to-end toolchain that runs directly in the browser called “edge-ml.org”.
As lecturer, I have achieved a perfect teaching score of 100%. I believe in conveying strong theoretical knowledge and creating a teaching environment that fosters brilliance through excellence in practice. I am committed to deliver highly engaging lectures. From my students, I expect academic output on all levels.
Throughout my career, I have received two scholarships, two best paper awards, one dissertation award, one master thesis award, and 10 first prizes at various hackathons around the world. I have also served as a reviewer or organizer for different A* journals and conferences.
